GALLERY: Perfect day in the sun at BGL Sports Bash

After a wash-out last year, it was ideal conditions for the BGL Sport Bash which was headlined by the Dean Headley XI versus a team of ‘local legends’.

Former England internationals Simon Jones, Geraint Jones and Phil DeFreitas were among the top former pros to turn out on the day, following on from the under 10s competition the Humberts Cup which was won by Barnack Bats.

The day raises funds for a host of good causes, including the Matt Hampson Foundation, the Seb Goold Trust and #TeamGeorge.

The latter is the social media campaign for George Robinson who suffered spinal injuries in a match for Stamford School in South Africa.

George was with his family enjoying the occasion. He said: “It’s amazing. It brings the whole community together and brings awareness of charities like the Matt Hampson Foundation.

“It’s brilliant the support these days create and we are very grateful.”

George’s dad Simon added: “I love sport and the values of sport and the team ethic. There’s good energy here, it’s a brilliantly organised event and the facilities are fantastic.

“It’s a very clever way of doing it and bringing a community together.”

The day was attended by more than 1,000 people and included music, street performers, an auction and a live band to see out the day.

Former England cricketer and Stamford Endowed School’s head of cricket Dean Headley organises the event.

He said: “The weather has been great and the people have supported it a lot. I think it’s raised quite a lot money again.

“We are just trying to build a really nice family day, not just cricket. Hopefully those 1,000 people go away and say what a wonderful day they had.

“The Kwik Cricket has been fantastic. It’s a nice thing for them to be doing.

“A lot of people think it’s just a cricket day but it’s more than that.”
