French downpours heading to East Anglia for EU polling day

Ironically, if you get wet on EU Referendum polling day, the Met office says it will be because of increasingly warm and humid air arriving from France later tomorrow, bringing with it an increased risk of thunderstorms.

The Met Office issued a yellow ‘be aware’ warning valid from 6pm tomorrow until 6am on Friday for intense, localised showers across East Anglia where 30 mm or more could fall in an hour very locally, with 50 mm or more in 2 hours.

The Warning says: “Although many areas will probably miss them, scattered but potentially intense thundery downpours seem likely to affect parts of the warning area from late Wednesday and through Thursday.

“Please be aware of possible localised ‘medium’ impacts from either flooding or frequent lightning.”

However, its experts say there is still ‘room for error’ in the northwestward extent of this airmass and how widely thunderstorms develop and where.

It adds: “The southeast of the warning area is currently considered most at risk and updates to the warning will be made as new information becomes available.”
