Peterborough residents go green for the day to make city a healthier place to live

Peterborough residents went green for the day to try and make their city a healthier place to live.

Individuals, businesses and organisations came together to ‘march forth’ for the environment as part of the city’s first ever Climate Action Day. Using the hashtag #PbroMarchForth, Facebook and Twitter was awash with pledges from people sharing their experiences of going vegan for the day, walking to work, turning down the thermostat, consuming zero plastic, planting trees and only consuming food sourced within a 30 mile radius. Organisations and individuals who took part in the event included: Peterborough United Football Club, the emergency services, charities, schools, politicians, and the Peterborough Telegraph. Among those to do something a bit different was Nene Valley Primary School where pupils were reading by torch as all the lights had been turned off. The event was launched by Peterborough City Council as part of its Carbon Management Action Plan for 2020/21, which is on the agenda to be signed off by Full Council on Wednesday evening. People were challenged to make a personal pledge to change one aspect of their daily routine for a full 24 hours to reduce their carbon footprint. The aim was to show how doable it is to implement small lifestyle changes, and it is hoped it will inspire some residents to continue their pledges either long-term or for a couple of days a week over the next year.
