IOPC release statement as investigation into police conduct before Peterborough lorry crash is launched
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) have issued a statement as an investigation into how Cambridgeshire Police acted in connection with the lorry crash on the A1 on Tuesday (July 28).
Cambridgeshire Police said they referred themselves to the watchdog following the incident, which saw one lorry driver seriously injured, another arrested, and the northbound carriageway closed for most of the day.
Now the IOPC have released more details on their investigation.
A spokesperson said: “We received a referral from Cambridgeshire Constabulary yesterday relating to a road traffic collision early Tuesday morning in Peterborough. The referral relates to prior police contact with the driver of one of the vehicles involved on Monday night. We will assess the referral in due course before deciding whether further action is required from us.”

Cambridgeshire Police said the force's Professional Standards Department referred the force to the IOPC ‘ in relation to an earlier incident involving one of the vehicles.’
Officers were called at 2.49am on Tuesday (28 July) following a collision involving two Scania HGVs.
A 43-year-old man from Saltburn, Cleveland, suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital, where he remains in a stable condition.
The other driver, a 50-year-old man from Great Barr, Birmingham, suffered minor injuries and was also taken to hospital for treatment.
He has since been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving while over the drug-drive limit and possession of cannabis.
He has now been bailed until October 28.
Police are still appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision, to contact police via the force website, quoting Operation Oystercatcher. Anyone without internet access should call 101.
