Firefighters return to scene of nature reserve fire close to Peterborough for third day
The battle against a fire on a nature reserve close to Peterborough has entered a third day.
At just after 3:20pm on Monday, crews were called to Holme Fen in Holme to a well-developed fire in a wooded area.
More than 40 firefighters, including crews from Stanground, Chatteris, Dogsthorpe, Whittlesey, Huntingdon, Thorney and Manea, along with a specialist 4x4 vehicle from Thorney, the water carrier from Ramsey and a crew from Oundle in Northamptonshire, attended the incident and crews have been working ever since.
Using beaters to extinguish the fire and working in sectors, crews managed to scale back the blaze as of 10pm on Monday evening.

They then returned on Tuesday and again on Wednesday to check for hotspots. The service has said that the fire is deep seated in peat so is expected to take some time to fully extinguish.
The service confirmed: “Crews will be returning to the scene today Wednesday (29) to continue checking for hotspots and make the area safe.
“The cause of the fire is still under investigation.”
