Now National Highways have confirmed that a lengthy closure will remain in place for most of today.

A spokesperson said: “The A1 in Cambridgeshire is closed northbound between J17 of the A1(M) (near Peterborough A1139) and the A47 (near Wansford) following a serious collision involving two HGV's that occurred at 03:00.

“The closure remains in place to facilitate vehicle recovery and collision investigation.

“The southbound carriageway has since been reopened with lane 2 of (2) remaining closed for emergency services to work safely at the scene.

“Traffic caught within the closure has now been released.

“Once recovery and collision investigation is complete, service providers will be able to access scene to assess any carriageway damage.

“Both HGVs involved caught fire following the collision and has caused substantial road surface damage, which will need to be resurfaced.

“Plans are in place to mobilise resurfacing crew and materials to attend once recovery and collision investigation is complete. Initial scene clearance and recovery is complex and will be protracted.

“The northbound carriageway is not expected to re-open until later this evening.”

A spokesperson for Cambridgeshire Police said: “Please be aware the A1 Northbound is closed at Haddon services due to an RTC on the A1 near Sibson in the early hours of the morning. This is likely to remain closed for the rest of the day due to damage to the road surface, and there are significant tailbacks prior to Junction 17 of the A1. The A15 from Hampton/Yaxley towards the A1 is also heavily congested.”
