Deepings Community Library launches new free bus service

A fortnightly bus service to and from Deepings Community Library in Market Deeping will run on Mondays from July 4, picking people up from 1.30pm and then dropping passengers back at their door.

The bus service is an idea jointly put together by The Friends of Deeping Library (FoDL), a group of volunteers who came together in December 2013 after plans were announced by Lincolnshire County Council to drastically cut the number of libraries it runs from 47 to 15.

Liz Waterland, chairman of FoDL, said: “When Lincolnshire County Council first proposed to close Deepings Library, one of their reasons was that everyone had a car or could go on a bus, so a local library wasn’t needed.

“However, The Friends of Deeping Library know this certainly isn’t true and that it is often the older residents who find travel to a library difficult as they may not drive or the bus service is inaccessible from their home.

“As a result, we have teamed up with Age Concern in the Deepings and Barchester Charitable Foundation (which helps the elderly and adults with disabilities across Britain) to offer a free minibus service to Deepings Community Library for older residents in the Deepings area.

“The bus will run every fortnight, picking people up at their door from 1.30pm and taking them to the library where they will have plenty of time to choose from books, including large print and audio books, or even use the free computers.

“We will then drop them back at their door, with people who use walking frames happily accommodated.”
