Woman charged after destruction spree in Peterborough Sainsbury’s

A woman has been charged after a large amount of stock was destroyed at a Peterborough Sainsbury’s.

The incident happened on Tuesday morning (February 16) at the Sainsbury’s superstore located in the Bretton Centre.

Video evidence posted online by a witness inside the store shows a woman without a face mask and several bottles of wine being destroyed by being thrown onto the floor before Police arrive.

Police have since confirmed that a woman has been charged with criminal damage, threatening behaviour and for an assault on a staff member.

A spokesperson for Cambridgeshire Police said: “We were called just before 10am yesterday morning (Tuesday 16 February) with reports of violence at Sainsbury’s in Bretton Centre.

“Cochita Haines, 61, of Clipston Walk in Westwood, Peterborough, was arrested and has since been charged with criminal damage - specifically destroying wine bottles worth £500, threatening behaviour and assault on a member of staff at the store.

“She has been released on bail to appear at Peterborough Magistrates’ Court on 7 April.”

A spokesperson from Sainsbury’s added: “We can confirm an incident took place at our Bretton store and we are supporting the police with their investigation.

“We are asking all customers to wear a mask and shop alone if they can. Our colleagues have worked extremely hard to keep our stores safe for everyone and we will not tolerate abuse towards them.”
