UPDATE: Man charged with possessing an explosive with intent to endanger life or property after discovery in Peterborough

A man has been charged with possessing an explosive with intent to endanger life or property and assault by beating after homemade suspicious devices were found in a Peterborough home.

Stefan Fitzgerald, 23, of no known address, was arrested following the discovery at an address in Stokesay Court, Longthorpe, on Tuesday, June 21.

The discovery of homemade explosives was made while officers were arresting the 23-year-old on suspicion of assault.

He was charged at 8.30pm last night after police were granted extra time to question him yesterday and will now appear before Cambridge Magistrates’ Court this morning, Thursday, June 23.

Police and the bomb squad remained at the scene yesterday and extended the cordon around the property, but the cordon has this morning been lifted.

The discovery is not being linked to terrorism with a Cambridgeshire police spokeswoman stating that it is being treated as an “isolated incident.”
