The officers started following the caravan - which was being towed by a 4x4 on Sunday night.

A spokesman for Cambridgeshire police said: "Our Neighbourhood Support Team were out on patrol in the Bretton Way area on Sunday night when they spotted this caravan being towed by the 4x4 which didn’t have its lights on.

"In an un-marked police car, the team followed the suspicious vehicle as it pulled into the ice rink car park in Stirling Way.

"The occupants must have cottoned on as the driver jumped out of the vehicle and ran off, so an officer swiftly hopped into the driver’s seat and drove it back to Thorpe Wood.

"Checks of the caravan’s number plate showed it was registered to an address in Lincolnshire and had actually been stolen half-an-hour before the team’s interception. The 4x4 was on cloned plates and was meant to be off the road, oh and cutting equipment was found in the boot!

"In less than two hours of it being stolen, the £20k caravan was returned to its rightful owner."
