Recorded crime in Peterborough falls - but increase in robbery, drug offending and stalking in city

The number of crimes recorded in Peterborough has fallen by more than 3,000, new statistics have revealed.

In the year ending September 2019, there were a total of 18,628 crimes recorded in the city - a 16 per cent drop compared to the year ending September 2018, when there were 21,331 recorded crimes, according to figures released today by the Office For National Statistics.

The reduction in recorded crime has included a five per cent fall in violent crimes, a five per cent fall in sexual offences, a 25 per cent drop in burglary (including a 31 per cent reduction in domestic burglaries), a 37 per cent drop in the number of shoplifting offences recorded, and a four per cent fall in the number of offences involving the possession of weapons.

However, there was a recorded rise in the number of drug offences, which increased by four per cent, robbery, which increased by three per cent, and stalking, which increased by 18 per cent.

Cambridgeshire as a whole saw crime rise by one per cent, with a total of 66,201 offences recorded, compared to 65,312 in the previous 12 months.

Across the county, there was a rise in violence, sexual offending, robbery, drug offences and public order offences.

In England as a whole, there was a five per cent rise in crime, including a 12 per cent rise in violent offences, a three per cent rise in sexual offences, a 12 per cent rise in robberies and a 20 per cent rise in drug offences.
