Reader letter: Estate Wardens could be answer

With the increasing number of reports that are appearing in The Peterborough Telegraph of environmental abuse in and around the city and within the Townships(particularly the Ortons) residents are having increasing concern and are considering requesting bringing back the need for Estate Wardens to be the ‘eyes and ears’ within the community to help reporting those causing the problems of littering, flytipping, graffiti and vandalism that is regularly being seen in the woods, hedgerows, tree belts and ponds.

Following the departure of the PDC who introduced these attractive amenities in and around the Townships and with its care and maintenance, things have deteriorated and the pride of place and love where you live attitudes have drastically declined, although there are many residents who still genuinely care and have concern about these problems.

Many are inclined to blame ‘out of sight out of mind’ children for many of the problems but with discarded bags of clothes, broken furniture and toys flytipped and remains of DIY along with bicycle wheels, and frames etc dumped in the local ponds one cannot always blame these young members within the community.

Over the past decades the Peterborough Telegraph has reported on these problems and with the photography to support one is inclined to doubt the mentality of those responsible. Investigations are still ongoing to identify those responsible for these anti-social action and already many have been named and shamed, thanks to witnesses coming forward and reporting such instances.

To try and save these important parts of these estates (townships) and the valued wildlife that attempts to survive, there have been calls for CCTV to be installed and warning notices to be sited at the vulnerable areas (Stagsden, Bringhurst, and Mandeville) to name just a few.
