"We now have a more detailed description which we hope will jog someone’s memory. The woman is thought to be in her late 70s/80s. She is around 5ft 4 of medium build, with white/grey hair.

"She was wearing a brown tartan woollen coat that had a hood, over a long haired bright orange top, a brown silk headscarf worn round the neck, cream trousers, blue socks and blue sandals. It is possible that the woman may have used a wooden walking stick with a curved handle."

DS Simon Mason and Gemma Smith added: “We are currently conducting a number of inquiries to identify the woman, establish the circumstances leading up to her death and trace her family.

“This woman may be local but there is a possibility she may be from a neighbouring county.

“As part of this we are appealing to the public for help and would urge anyone that recognises the description to get in touch with us as soon as possible.”

Anyone with information should contact police on 101, quoting incident 59 or April 12.

Officers were called to the area at 7.30am on Sunday by a local resident.

The woman was recovered from the water a short time later. The death is currently being treated as unexplained.
