Police issue warning after spate of burglaries in Peterborough last week last week

Police have issued a warning for increased vigilance from residents after 12 burglaries were committed across Peterborough last week.

Detective Sergeant Justin Parr, from the north Acquisitive Crime Team (ACT), said: “This time of year we usually see an increase in burglaries with warmer weather and homes often left unsecure which can attract opportunistic thieves.

“Homes without basic security features are five times more likely to be burgled than homes with security, therefore my advice to our communities is to take up simple, yet effective, precautionary measures to reduce the chances of becoming a victim of burglary, such as installing home security measures or ensuring doors and windows are securely locked.”

Security measures that can be taken are:

- Install a visible burglar alarm

- Have good outdoor lighting or motion sensor security lights

- Lock doors, windows, side gates and outbuildings every time you leave your house, even if you’re just out in the garden

- Keep all keys out of sight and away from letterboxes

- Keep ladders and tools stored away

DS Parr added: “I would also ask members of the public to be vigilant and report any concerns about suspicious activity to us – even if you think it may be nothing, it could help us prevent a burglary or catch those responsible.”
