Peterborough opens book of condolence for American shooting victims

A book of condolence has been opened at Peterborough Town Hall for people to pay respects for the terrorist attack in Orlando, Florida.

The book has been opened today, and will be available for people to sign and leave messages of support for the survivors and family and friends of the 49 victims of the shootings at a gay bar in America that happened over the weekend.

Omar Mateen opened fire at the Pulse club on Sunday leaving 49 dead and dozens injured. Mateen was killed by police.

A Peterborough City Council spokesman said the book would remain open for part of this week while the Town Hall is open.

A vigil for the victims is taking place at 7.30pm tonight (Tuesday) in St John’s Square, Peterborough, and the book will be taken to the event for people to sign.

At Peterborough Cathedral, prayers were said for the victims this morning. Canon Ian Black said: “We have been deeply shocked by the violent attacks in Orlando. There is no place for homophobia or hatred. We remembered everyone affected by the shootings in our prayers at the Cathedral this morning.”
