He is due to be sentenced today after yesterday being found guilty of murder, attempted murder and assault on an emergency worker at Cambridge Crown Court.

Kostiajevas never denied carrying out the murder but tried to excuse it on having a medical condition which meant he did not recall it happening.

Senior investigating officer Superintendent Michael Branston stated: “He said he had no memory of the attack and tried to hide behind the fact he suffered from epilepsy. He said he had had a psychotic episode but the jury saw beside that.”

Some murder investigations are hindered by a lack of evidence, but that was not a problem in this instance.

Instead, the key to securing a guilty conviction was dismissing the medical excuse.

Superintendent Branston added: “Cutting through his defence that this was caused by a psychotic episode was about engaging with the right experts.

“There was never any doubt he had committed to attacks, it was all about proving he knew what he was doing.

“He showed no remorse. His reaction was ‘I don’t remember this, it was all down to this condition’. He is cold and calculated.”
