Peterborough man jailed after spitting at police officer 'during COVID pandemic

A Peterborough man who spat at a police officer 'during Covid-19' has been jailed.

Niculae Negoita (53) admitted a string of assaults when he appeared at Peterborough Magistrates' Court this week.

The court heard Negoita assaulted a police constable, a PCSO and two other people, as well as damaging shutters belonging to New Horizon amusement arcade.

The incidents all happened on February 21 this year - but sentencing District Judge Ken Sheraton said the offence was made more serious because it occurred during Covid-19.

Negoita was jailed for a total of 34 weeks, and was ordered to pay £100 compensation to the police constable, £150 compensation to New Horizon, and £100 compensation to the PCSO.

He was given until March 31 2021 to pay the £350.
