The Peterborough event was set to take place on Saturday evening at the Fair Meadow Car Park on Oundle Road, with people planning to pay tribute to Cain Martin (19) who lost his life in a collision last month.

However, the event was cancelled on Friday following advice from Cambridgeshire police.

On Saturday around 200 vehicles showed up to an industrial estate in Market Deeping in contravention of coronavirus rules, with Lincolnshire police telling The Peterborough Telegraph the event was being linked to the cancelled Peterborough event.

However, the organiser of the Peterborough event - who asked not to be named - said there was no link, and said some people were giving the modified car scene a bad name..

She said: "No, the meet was NOT in anyway related to the cancelled meet in Peterborough.

"I was asked repeatedly by Peterborough police to cancel it due to covid rules so reluctantly I did and lots of people were very disheartened about it, as we all wanted to say goodbye to Cain in our own way as not everyone can go to the funeral.

"If other people arranged another location it certainly had nothing to do with me.

"Lincolnshire police did give me a call in the morning and asked if it was connected and I said no. I am not risking being fined - if I was going to risk it I would have continued with the Peterborough event.

"We all like to show off our pride and joy like many others and not everyone there is in to the drifting, popping and banging etc. We like to meet new people and have a chat. Yes some make a bad name for the car scene but we are not all like that."

A spokesman for Lincolnshire police said; "At around 8pm (on Saturday) around 200 cars were present at this location and in the Halifax Drive area, before leaving when officers attended.

"We are grateful to the people who reported this meeting to us, which was a breach of the government’s coronavirus guidelines.

"Officers will be looking at any offences for this breach or offences under the Road Traffic Act, as some vehicles were taking part in drifting."

Anyone with information should contact Lincolnshire police on 101.
