Man arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after 3-year-old boy seriously injured in crocodile enclosure of zoo has bail extended

A man that was arrested after a three-year-old boy was seriously injured in the crocodile enclosure of a Huntingdonshire zoo has had his bail extended.

A man in his 30s from Norfolk was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder on June 18 after a three-year-old boy ended up in the crocodile enclosure of Johnsons of Old Hurst zoo, just outside of Huntingdon.

The boy was rushed to hospital in a critical condition after being attacked by one of the animals in the enclosure. Zoo owners Andrew and Tracey Johnson leapt into the enclosure to save the boy.

A fundraising campaign has raised over £117,000 for the family of the boy to aid in his recovery. His family have revealed the extent of his injuries, which include a nerve graft on his left arm to help him to regain function in his left hand. He is now continuing his recovery at home.

The man is believed to have learning difficulties and been in the company of two carers on the day of the incident. Police deemed him unfit for interview at the time of his arrest and bailed him until September 18.

Cambridgeshire Police have now confirmed that this bail has been extended until December 17.

Norfolk County Council has confirmed that it was not providing any care for the man but is still carrying out a Section 42 inquiry under the Care Act 2014.

A Section 42 enquiry is a process in which local authorities investigate if an adult with care and support needs is experiencing or at risk of abuse or neglect, and cannot protect themselves.
