Peterborough police have been given more time to question a man arrested after suspected homemade explosives were discovered at a property in Longthorpe yesterday.

While arresting the 23-year-old man for assault, police found what are thought to be handmade explosives. The bomb-squad attended the address in Stokesay Court, Longthorpe.

Police have 24-hours to question suspects before charging or releasing them. This time expired at midday, but officers have been granted an extension until 7.30pm this evening.

The police cordon has been extended to cordon off the road at its junction with Harlech Grange this morning, Wednesday June 22.

Scene of crime officers remain at the scene this afternoon as a fingertip forensic examination of the house both inside and out continues.

The hand-made devices were removed by the bomb squad last night.

The discovery is not being linked to terrorism with a Cambridgeshire police spokeswoman stating that it is being treated as an “isolated incident.”

She added: “The cordon is there just as a precaution. Neighbouring residents are still in their houses.

“Searches of the property are still ongoing. They are likely to take some time.”
