Large rise in violent offences in Peterborough

The number of violent offences in Peterborough has risen by 19 per cent in just a year, new figures have revealed.

Crime statistics published by the Office for National Statistics today showed there had been 7,345 violent offences recorded in the city in the 12 months ending at the end of March this year, compared to 6,165 in the same period the previous year, the equivalent of a 19 per cent rise. Across England and Wales there had been a seven per cent rise in violence during the same period.

In Peterborough there was a one per cent increase in all crime, with 22,065 offences, up from 21,929 the previous year. The one per cent rise matches the rise seen across England and Wales.

The statistics also show a large wise in public order offences in Peterborough - 36 per cent - and a three per cent rise in drug offences.

However, there were some successes, with a four per cent drop in burglaries, and 17 per cent drop in all theft offences, and an eight per cent drop in robbery offences.

Cambridgeshire as a whole saw a five per cent rise in overall crime, and a 21 per cent increase in violence, an eight per cent drop in burglary and a 22 per cent rise in drug offences.
