The man died following an incident in Oundle Road on Thursday last week after police had been called to reports of concern for the welfare of a man who had become unwell and was walking into oncoming traffic.

Cambridgeshire police said at the time: “Due to officers being in contact with the man before he died, a referral was made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct who are now investigating the circumstances.”

A statement from the IOPC said: “Cambridgeshire Police were called to reports of a man behaving erratically on Oundle Road at around 4.30pm on 30 July 30.

“We understand, at this time, that officers attended the scene and attempted to detain the man. A short time later he became ill and died at the scene.

“Our investigators attended the post incident procedures, liaised with officers at the scene and have viewed body worn video.”

The IOPC is now appealing for any witnesses to the incident to come forward.

IOPC Regional Director Sarah Green said: “Our thoughts are with the man’s family and friends, and all those affected by this incident.

“When someone sadly dies, after coming into contact with the police, the IOPC is required to investigate.

“We are in the process of gathering as much evidence as possible in order to establish and examine the circumstances of what happened.

“The officers have provided statements but it is also important that anyone who may have witnessed the interaction between the man and the police come forward and speak with our investigators.

“We would appeal to anyone who witnessed the incident to contact us and assist with our independent investigation.

“Witnesses can email us at [email protected] or call 0800 029 4685.”
