A huge police presence was needed in Peterborough city centre after reports of a gang of 30 men - who were possibly armed - gathered.

Cambridgeshire police were alerted to the incident in Park Road at 6.20pm on Saturday evening (24 April) by CCTV operators in central Peterborough.

A Cambridgeshire police spokeswoman said: “It was reported about 30 men, possibly with weapons, surrounded one individual however they managed to flee the group before officers arrived. It is not believed the man was injured.

“Officers attended to intervene and disperse the group, no weapons were seen however a section 35 Dispersal Order was put in place until 6.30am yesterday morning (Sunday), as well as additional powers for officers to stop and search anyone in the area under section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act.”

A 19-year-old man from London was arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply class A drugs. He has since been released from custody under investigation.

A 22-year-old man from Peterborough was arrested on suspicion of a public order offence and was dealt with by way of a community resolution.
