Former RAF site targeted twice by arsonists as moped left on fire near Peterborough railway crossing

A former RAF site was targeted twice by arsonists last week.

RAF Upwood, not far from Ramsey, was targeted on both Friday and Saturday evening.

On the first occasion, a crew and the water carrier from Ramsey were called out at 6.52pm where they saw a large amount of smoke issuing from the site.

On arrival they found a large bonfire containing wood, tyres and rubbish.

The firefighters were not able to return to their station until 9.40pm.

On the Saturday, at 7.15pm, crews from Ramsey and Huntingdon arrived to find smoke issuing from a derelict building.

This time, the firefighters did not return to their bases until 9pm after putting out the flames.

Anyone with information on either fire is asked to contact police on 101 or by visiting www.cambs.police.uk to submit an online report.

Meanwhile, on Saturday at 4.43pm a crew from Stanground was called to a small vehicle fire in Fellowes Gardens, Fletton.

The crew arrived to find a moped on fire near a railway crossing. Firefighters used a hose reel to extinguish the fire before returning to their station by 5.11pm.

The fire is also believed to have been started deliberately, and anyone with information is asked to contact police.
