Female Genital Mutilation '˜a live issue' in Peterborough

Dozens of women were identified as being the victims of female genital mutilation (FGM) in Peterborough in the last few months of 2016.

Figures released by the NHS showed there were 55 attendances at health appointments in Peterborough where FGM was identified between October and December.

FGM is the ritual removal of some or all of the external female genitalia, and is found in some African, Middle Eastern and Asian countries.

An NSPCC spokesman said: “These figures prove that FGM is very much a live issue for women and young girls today. FGM is child abuse and has no place in any society.

“It is reassuring to see that women whose experience of FGM is identified and recorded are returning to their healthcare providers. This indicates that acknowledging the presence of FGM supports women to ensure their health needs are met and shows just how vital it is that health professionals are trained to spot the signs and support women and girls following disclosure. Agencies must also share information when a victim is being treated, so that other girls in their family are supported and protected.
