The campaign called ‘Peterborough says no more’ has been supported by leading organisations and individuals in the city who have pledged to make positive changes and support victims.

For those wondering why the campaign is needed, below are some of the shocking statistics about domestic abuse:

National

. Two women a week are killed by a current or former partner in England and Wales.

. 75 per cent of these deaths occur in a household

. Domestic abuse will affect one in three women in their lifetime and one in six men

. During the first three weeks of lockdown earlier this year, more than 40,000 calls were made to the National Domestic Abuse helpline.

Cambridgeshire and Peterborough in 2019/20

. There were 1,979 referrals to the Independent Domestic Violence Advisory Services for domestic abuse, an increase of nearly 150 from 2018/19

. A total of 1,471 cases were heard at MARAC - Multi-Agency Risk Assessment Conferences

. A total of 14,116 domestic abuse incidents were reported to Cambridgeshire Constabulary which is an increase on the previous year. Crime rates went up by around 25 per cent

. 1,116 victims of violent crime (including domestic abuse and sexual violence) were supported by the Victim and Witness Service.

. Refuges across the county housed 89 women and 129 children

. 1,077 people received support from domestic abuse outreach services

. Adult Independent Sexual Violence Advisers received 315 referrals, while the children’s ISVA had 150

. Adult Safeguarding teams received 774 referrals that involved a domestic abuse element and 280 with a sexual violence element

. 621 young people received support from the VAWG (Violence Against Women and Girls) project.

Coronavirus

. 35 percent of UK women experienced at least one sexist workplace demand since the lockdown started in March

. 19 percent of girls and women aged 14 to 31 reported experiencing more street harassment during lockdown

. Almost one in two (46 per cent) of women and non-binary people reported experiencing online abuse since the beginning of the pandemic.
