Under legislation brought in by the Government, officers can hand out fines or arrest individuals flouting social distancing rules, which include restrictions on leaving home, not congregating in groups and keeping a distance of at least two metres from other people.

Out of the 15 fines, three have been handed out in Peterborough, four in Fenland, one in Huntingdon, one in Ely and six in Cambridge.

Eight of those fines have been issued in the past 48 hours.

Cambridgeshire police said: “Thank you to the majority of people who are playing their part in helping us save lives during this pandemic by following the restrictions.

“Over the last two days we have only had to issue eight fines to people repeatedly ignoring our advice, bringing our total so far to 15.”
