Big rise in number of assaults on Cambridgeshire police officers

In the 12 months up to the end of August 2020, there were 472 assaults on constables across the county - an increase of more than 13 per cent compared to last year.

Chief Constable Nick Dean said: “As Chief Constable, the welfare and safety of the Constabulary’s workforce is at the forefront of my mind. Being verbally or physically abused whilst at work is unacceptable in any line of work and should never be shrugged off as “simply part of the job”.

“The rise we have seen in the number of assaults against our officers and staff both locally and nationally is a cause for concern. On average over the Covid ‘lockdown’ period, two officers per day have been subject to an assault in this county alone whilst trying to protect the public and keep people safe. Work is underway to make sure this review can help improve our situation.”
