Arsonists strike again at Peterborough flats

A bin was set alight and pushed against flats in the Dell, Woodston just after midnight.

A Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said; “At 12.15am on Wednesday (22) crews from Stanground, Dogsthorpe and the Peterborough Volunteers Fire Brigade were called to a fire on The Dell in Woodston.

“Firefighters arrived to find a bin on fire that was spreading to two flats. Wearing breathing apparatus they extinguished the fire using hose reels and returned to their stations by 3.35am.

“The property was unoccupied at the time of the fire.”

It is not the first time flats in The Dell have been hit by arsonists in recent months.

At 11.51pm on Friday April 24 crews from Stanground and Dogsthorpe were called to a fire in the street.

Firefighters arrived to find a bed on fire at the side of a house. They extinguished the fire before returning to their stations by 1am.

On May 29 arsonists set fire to a garage on the street.

At 11.32pm on July 6 crews the flats were evacuated after a fire was started.

Firefighters arrived to find a fire involving a mattress next to a building that was spreading to flats. Wearing breathing apparatus they extinguished the fire using a hose reel and other extinguishers.

The property was evacuated before the crews arrived.

A Cambridgeshire police spokesman said: “We are keeping an open mind as to whether the incidents are linked whilst we continue our enquiries.”
