Drivers seen ‘drifting’ have been heavily criticised for potentially endangering lives at a busy Peterborough junction.

Four cars were seen tearing around the roundabout at the junction of Joseph Odam Way (by the Showground) and Lynch Wood on Oundle Road at 1.30am on Sunday morning.

Cllr Julie Howell, Green Party member for Orton Waterville on Peterborough City Council, said she had reported the information to police and was contacting the Safer Peterborough Partnership to ask “what will be done to apprehend those responsible and to prevent this activity in the future?”

She said: “The stupidity beggars belief. Oundle Road is a public highway. From that roundabout the speed limit is 40mph in one direction and 50mph in the other.

“It is 30mph along Lynch Wood and Joseph Odam Way.

“At that time of night the chances of vehicles and people being on the road at that junction is still considerable.

“The noise nuisance is bad enough, but there is real risk to life when driving in this way on a public road at night. I don’t believe those involved in the car cruise communities would condone this behaviour. It’s because of idiots like this that car enthusiasts will find it more and more difficult to enjoy their hobby safely.”

The Ortons has been a regular hotspot for drifters, with tyre screeching and engine revving keeping families up until the early hours of the morning.

Police have also previously put in place dispersal orders allowing them to take action where there is anti-social behaviour.

A Cambridgeshire police spokesman said: “Drifting on the roads is completely irresponsible, extremely dangerous and has previously resulted in people being seriously injured in Peterborough. Motorists should drive sensibly and in accordance with the laws of the road.

“We are working with local partners to establish measures to help prevent anti-social driving and assist us in apprehending those responsible for offences of this nature.”
