Shoplifter jailed after ignoring banning order and targeting Tesco in Peterborough on nine occasions

A shoplifter has been jailed after ignoring a banning order and targeting the same Tesco store in Peterborough nine times.

Police say that Adam Righalto-Apperley (33) had already been made subject to a criminal behaviour order banning him from entering Tesco in Staniland Way when he embarked on a new crime spree.

Cambridgeshire police say that during that crime spree between April 20 and May 11 he targeted Tesco in Staniland Way, Werrington, on nine separate occasions.

Police say the supermarket was one of six businesses he targeted over the same period.

A police spokesperson said: “Righalto-Apperley was caught on CCTV stealing a bike from outside Sainsbury’s in Bretton, Peterborough, on April 15.

“This kick-started his crime spree, where he committed 18 shopliftings across Peterborough between April 20 and May 11.

"During this time, he targeted six businesses, including Tesco in Staniland Way, Werrington, on nine separate occasions.

“Officers arrested Righalto-Apperley, of no fixed address, four days after his last offence after they found him on top of a bin in Gabriel Court, Fletton.”

Police say Righalto-Apperley was jailed for 25 months at Cambridge Crown Court after admitting the 19 thefts and nine counts of breaching his two-year criminal behaviour order (CBO), which he was made subject of in November and banned him from entering Tesco in Staniland Way.

Afterwards, PC Rebecca Risebrow, from the spree offender team, said: “Offenders such as Righalto-Apperley, who target specific stores for long periods of times, can have a significant impact on the staff who have to deal with it.

“I would like to thank all the businesses involved who continued to report any offences to us, their support in tackling retail crime in Peterborough is extremely valuable.”
