Council bin lorry is late for collection in Cowbit

A routine rubbish collection in Cowbit went off course on Wednesday after a bin lorry left the road and ended up in a ditch.

The drama unfolded in Mill Drove North, Cowbit, near the A16, at about 12.30pm when a refuse collection lorry from South Holland District Council came off the road and became stuck in the ditch.

A person living nearby, who asked not to be named, said: “It looked like the bin lorry slipped off the road and down the side of the dyke after trying to negotiate a bend, possibly at speed.

“No other vehicles were involved but police closed the road, where Mill Drove North meets the A16 Cowbit Road and Old Fendyke Road, so that recovery could take place.

“Then a recovery truck came to the scene at about 1.50pm and got the bin lorry out of the dyke.”

A Lincolnshire Police spokesman said: “We did not attend the incident initially, but did assist later with the vehicle being recovered which at around 1430.

South Holland District Council is now trying to find out how the accident happened.

A council spokesman said: “We are aware of an incident involving one of our refuse vehicles.

“Nobody involved was injured and no collections were missed, but we are currently investigating the incident.”
