African dance workshop thrills

Representatives from the Heritage Centre spent the day with performing arts students who are working towards their International Dance BTEC; firstly teaching them about the culture behind the dance, before helping them create a performance piece for their examinations.

African dance is known for representing everyday activities in African life. During the workshop students learned to contextualise the meaning of African dance including gestures and use of live music.

Alana Wimbley, Year 13 student at Ormiston Bushfield Academy, spoke about the day: “It was such a great experience to have the chance to work with the African Heritage Centre.

“Being able to work with dancers from within the African community was a privilege; their passion and love for dance was really inspiring and I know we all learnt so much.”

Andy Thorpe, assistant principal at Ormiston Bushfield Academy, added: “We’d like firstly to thank the African Heritage Centre for visiting the Academy; it was a special opportunity for the students and one they really benefited from.

“The dances that students created during the workshop will celebrate the beautiful dichotomy of Africa today – a celebration of traditional and modern life.”

The African Heritage Centre is based in Peterborough, and is made up of a team of educationists, musicians, artists and traditional therapists who are dedicated to sharing African culture; using it as a catalyst to inspire, educate.
