In addition, both Asda and Waitrose have installed automatic counting technology Qudini to their busiest stores in the UK.

The overall aim is to help maintain social distancing in stores and allow customers to wait in their cars if the store is too busy.

Other measures adopted by Asda include antimicrobial surfaces being used on shopping trolleys and shared touch points including fridges and freezers.

Antimicrobial surfaces using silver-ion technology are used to help eradicate bacteria and viruses within minutes of contact.

Marc Carey from SDA Cleanzone said: “Silver-ion technology is proven to eradicate common bacteria and viruses so we are pleased businesses such as Asda are using it throughout their stores.

“We envisage all shared touch points in the future will contain continuous cleaning technology which will be part of the new normal. The idea is that using antimicrobial technology alongside a regular cleaning protocol will create a safer environment for everyone. We believe the virus is not going away anytime soon so we need to interrupt transmission as much as possible.”

Waitrose is also extending opening times, remaining open until 11pm until December 23. On Christmas Eve stores will close at 6pm, although some of the grocer’s Little Waitrose convenience stores will stay open until midnight.

Last week, Asda announced stores will close on Boxing Day stating that it wants as many staff as possible to be able to enjoy an extended Christmas break with family and friends.
