Coronavirus: Free drinks for NHS and emergency staff as Peterborough stores open early for elderly and vulnerable

Workers in the NHS and the emergency services are being offered free drinks to thank them for their efforts during the coronavirus pandemic.

Pret stores are offering free hot drinks to NHS staff and 50 per cent off everything else to thank them for all they are doing.

The café chain has an outlet in Queensgate Shopping Centre. The offer is available in-store only and not through Deliveroo.

Following suit, McDonald’s is also offering a free drink to all emergency service and health and social care workers. All workers have to do is show their ID when ordering to receive the offer.

Indian and Nepalese restaurant Ghurka Lounge in Hampton is also offering free meals to NHS workers. The restaurant in Hampton is keeping a table for two reserved for any doctors and nurses.

Krishna, from the Ghurka Lounge, said: “The ‘small gesture’ is to say thank you for working during this time of great difficulty.”

Meanwhile, Sainsbury’s in Bretton is reportedly opening between 7am and 8am for elderly and vulnerable customers only.

And retail group QD Group has announced its stores in Peterborough will be opening half an hour earlier during the coronavirus outbreak, exclusively for older and less able customers.

Group chief executive Nick Rubins said: “As part of our ongoing programme of community support we will be opening all our stores half an hour earlier, Monday to Saturday, between 8.30am and 9am. This slot will be dedicated to our elderly customers and vulnerable people in the community, such as those with disabilities.

“As a family business, we want to make shopping easier for these valued customers during this very challenging situation. Of course, these customers are also welcome at any time of day and our staff will, as always, take excellent care of them.”

QD Group also said it is working around the clock to keep its shelves stocked.

QD is located in the Orton Centre in Peterborough and The Barn by Cherry Lane is in Gunthorpe Road, Paston.

BGL Group in Peterborough has also offered its assistance. A spokesperson said: “We are proactively reaching out to our charity partners and others to see what support our people are able to offer at this time. We would urge charities or local groups who are in need of support, such as volunteers or deliveries, to email [email protected].”
