Gas company conducting door-to-door checks after works to restore connection to over 400 Peterborough homes

A gas company is conducting checks on individual properties in Peterborough after working to fix a problem that had left residents without gas for several days.

Residents in the PE7 area of the city, mostly in the Hampton Gardens and Lakeside Edge areas, first noticed problems with their gas pressure on Sunday (November 6) and had previously been advised to only switch their heating systems on outside of peak times (7-9am and 4-7pm).

Problems left some without heating overnight when the temperatures hit well below freezing and also forced Hampton Gardens School to close on Tuesday (November 8).

The school has reopened today (November 9) and residents have noticed their heating systems working as normal today after GTC engineers worked through the night to get a temporary overload mains reinforcement up and running and continue work on laying an additional gas pipe to improve the pressure in the section of the network experiencing lower than normal pressures.

Once they are satisfied that all pressures have returned to normal, they will revert to investigating the root cause of the incident.

A spokesperson for GTC said: “GTC engineers worked into the night to complete the network reinforcement to the section of the gas network that was experiencing lower than normal pressures. Network pressures have now recovered to normal parameters.

“We still have engineers on site that will be visiting properties to ensure supplies are restored. Should you smell gas, please call the gas emergency service on 0800 111 999. We do apologise for any inconvenience we have caused and are grateful for your ongoing patience and understanding throughout this incident.”
