Haunting experience awaits at museum this week

Celebrate 500 years of local history and meet people from the past associated with the building which now houses Peterborough Museum.

But beware as some of its spookier secrets may also be revealed…

The Priestgate Vaults, which only opened to the public in October, are the historic cellars under Peterborough Museum and will open in the evenings for the first time as part of the campaign.

The cellars have original features, including windows from the Tudor house, the Georgian wine cellar, coal cellar and a room which was used as an air raid shelter during World War II.

As part of an escorted tour you will explore these rooms as characters from the past tell their stories, brought to life using new technology and theatrical effects.

Like much of the Museum - reputedly the city’s most haunted building -the cellars have a reputation as being haunted too, so you will hear some of these ghost stories and may find some of them brought to life…

Laura Hancock, cultural development officer for Vivacity, said: “The vaults are only accessible during the day when the museum is open, and then via a guided tour.

“This will be the first chance for people to enjoy the experience of an evening - thank to the national campaign (Museums at Night) which aims to make museums more accessible by opening up at a time when people do not normally get to see them.

“And it will also hopefully be a little more spooky.

Tours last approximately 45 minutes but are not suitable for under 8s or those of a nervous disposition. The Museums at Night tours take place on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday at 7.30pm, and Friday at 6pm. Tickets cost £4,or £3 concessions.
