Coronavirus: city centre restaurant closes for two weeks

Peterborough city centre restaurant and tea rooms Sundays is to close for an initial two week period in light of the on going conronavirus pandemic and Government advice on social distancing.

David Beever, who owns Sundays, based in Cathedral Precincts in Peterborough, issued a statement this morning, saying: “After the government advice (16/03/20) that people should avoid pubs, clubs & restaurants for the foreseeable future we have taken the decision to close for an initial 2 week period.

“During this time we will monitor all staff to ensure we are clear when we do re-open &  we will work to be in a position to offer a viable delivery model to start by the end of March ;-supplying cooked meals & the fresh ingredients vegetables/eggs etc which we have always sourced direct from farms.For now enjoy the weather & stay safe.”

Also closing is The Chalkboard Bistro and Tea Rooms at the Key Theatre.

Owners Hannah and Andy Jones, took to faceboook today with a message for customers.

It said: “We have come to the very sad and difficult decision to close the doors to The Chalkboard for now, keeping everyone safe and healthy is our main priority.

“We were so looking forward to Mother’s Day weekend and hope to do something special for mums in the the summer.

“We will miss you all and cannot wait to open our doors again.”

Meanwhile The Lightbox Cafe on Bridge Street, is to stay open but will reduce capacity.

Owner Eve Warner said: “Following the announcements yesterday we have put more measures in place, removing half of our tables to allow for social distancing.
“We are also taking collection and delivery orders  within the town centre. Please call us on 01733 894444 for any orders. All payments can be made over the phone or by contactless card.
“Our main priority is to keep our customers and our staff safe.
“Although businesswise we cannot close until we are told by the government to do so, on a personal level we understand that we may not see some of you for a while now and wish you and your loved ones the very best during this time.
We hope this is over soon and we can all get back to normal.”
Whittlesey’s Vesuvio restaurant is taking similar measure to stay open.

On its facebook page Peppe&Maria posted: “We would like to assure all our customers that we have and are still taking the maximum precautions with our cleaning and food preparation, we have since day one of opening used antibacterial cleaning spray and antibacterial soaps for hand washing.

“We will be open as usual with a full takeaway menu available.

“We have decided to reduce the tables that we serve and give more space between tables to give you all more distance from others, our music nights have been cancelled and postponed until further notice.

“It’s is entirely your choice to dine with us and you will be very welcomed, and we hope this difficult and scary situation will be resolved soon.

“Let’s stay strong and be kind to one another.”
