Six months of hard work came to fruition when Nene Valley Spirits opened Peterborough’s first micro-distillery and shop this week.

It has been a labour of love for gin lovers Leigh Taylor and John Morris, who launched the business during lockdown - and saw the culmination of their efforts open the doors in Sacrewell Farm’s Artisan Courtyard on Saturday.

“Things have gone really well,” said Leigh, the self-taught distiller of the team. “We were live online for a week before we opened the new premises and sales are going really well, it is starting to gain momentum. We will be open right through to Christmas.”

Leigh added: “The whole idea only came together during lockdown earlier this year, so we decided to launch with two products - both hand-crafted, premium distilled gins.”

Currently lining the shelves is Ermine Street - honouring the area’s Roman heritage - and it won’t be long before it is joined by Colibri, which has been inspired by Leigh’s travels through Latin America.

People can visit without paying to enter the farm,” stressed Leigh, “and as time goes on they will be able to see the processes involved - blending, distilling in our traditional alembic pot still, bottling, waxing and labelling.

“The courtyard could become quite an artisan shopping destination.”
