Peterborough schools provide Christmas treats for sheltered housing residents

Teachers from Ken Stimpson Community School in Werrington delivered festive goodie bags to Sutton Court residents, a Hyde sheltered scheme.

Sutton Court has links with the school with residents visiting two or three times a year for dinners and remembrance assemblies, while the school choir visits the scheme regularly to entertain residents.

Covid has meant that all of these activities have had to stop but the school was determined that residents would know that its pupils were still thinking of them so arranged for festive treats to be delivered.

And if that wasn’t enough excitement, when Hyde’s lead scheme officer Andrea Wilson, arrived at Sutton Court a few days later, a large envelope had been delivered.

The envelope was full of cards, letters and pictures from pupils at William Law Church of England School, also based in Werrington.

Residents at Sutton Court usually visit the school every year when the pupils are learning about the Second World War as the pupils like hearing the first-hand experiences some of the residents are able to share.

Covid meant that residents weren’t able to go this year, but the pupils and teachers wanted them to know that they hadn’t been forgotten.

Andrea said: “Normally at this time of year we have lots of festivities including trips to local schools, visits from school choirs, a Christmas meal at the scheme and lots and lots of mince pie and coffee mornings.

“Sadly, Covid has meant that we haven’t been able to do any of these things. These little treats from our local schools have really cheered residents up at this difficult time.”
