Bookies reveal odds of Peterborough having White Christmas in 2026

The city last experienced an official White Christmas in 2000

We may not have even passed Halloween yet, but for many late October always marks the start of attention beginning to turn to Christmas.

It’s at this time of year when we start to see Christmas decorations and chocolates in the shops, as well as details being released for various festive events across Peterborough.

The big day might be nine weeks away, but plenty of us are guilty of pondering that all important question: will 2026 finally be the year that Peterborough has a White Christmas.

Christmas is - and has always been - associated with snow, but here in the UK the odds of seeing any significant snowfall on Christmas Day are relatively low.

For a Christmas to be considered white, just a single snowflake has to be recorded falling at any point during the 24 hours of December 25 at any of the Met Office's network of around 300 observing stations.

In terms of a ‘proper’ white Christmas, like those snowy scenes you see on cards, the last one of those was in 2010.

Will Peterborough get a White Christmas in 2026?

With Christmas Day being more than two months away, detailed weather forecasts for the day are some way off being released.

But perhaps unsurprisingly, bookmakers are already using their own weather models to predict the likelihood of different cities across the country experiencing a White Christmas.

William Hill, for example, is currently offering odds of 5/1 for a White Christmas in Peterborough in 2026.

William Hill spokesperson Lee Phelps said: “With talk of the El Nino effect bringing a polar vortex to the UK this winter, we make Peterborough a 5/1 chance to see snowfall on Christmas Day.

“The city’s last recorded White Christmas was 26 years ago, and this year only Edinburgh (2/1), Newcastle (3/1), Manchester (3/1) and Leeds (4/1) are shorter in the betting to see a blanket of white on December 25th.

“London, just 75 miles south of Peterborough, is a bigger price at 6/1 to see snowfall on Christmas Day.”

Peterborough’s last official White Christmas came way back in 2000, when the Wittering weather observation site recorded snowfall.

Only time will tell whether more than a quarter of a century of waiting could end in 2026!
