Looking Back: ‘Your Peterborough snow scenes from winters past’

I hope you’ve not had enough of snowy pictures because those featured in Looking Back in recent weeks have inspired readers to dig out some of their own photographs from Peterborough winters past.

The first two pictures were sent in by Peter White.

Peter said: “ I have attached two pictures taken from the old Mitchell’s building in January 1982 showing the river frozen and the trees covered in ice after days of freezing fog.

“One picture shows the faint outline of the cathedral and the other shows the Key theatre.

“At the time of these photos the Mitchell’s building was occupied by British Telecom staff working in their drawing office and external planning departments.’’

I love the picture of a very snowy scene which was sent in by Michael Haynes.

He said: “This is a scan from a photo I took from Rhubarb Bridge many years ago with Peter Brotherhoods in the background. I think the first car is an Austin Allegro.’’

Is Michael right about the make of the car? An Austin Allegro was one of the first cars I owned, but I’m not sure.

Thanks to Peter and Michael.

If you have any old pictures – perhaps of your first car – you would like to share send them to [email protected]. uk or to Nigel Thornton, Looking Back,Peterborough Telegraph, Brightfields Business Hub, Bakewell Road, Orton Southgate,Peterborough, PE2 6XU.
