Looking Back: C&A and a packed Queensgate in the 80s

These pictures from photographer Chris Porsz are some wonderfully evocative images from 1980 in Peterborough.

There’s a deserted, but very festive, Cathedral Square. You can see the Ernest Jones shop on the corner and, Chris tells me, in the background on Long Causeway is an Army and Navy Stores shop.

There is a shot of a heaving Queensgate in the run up to Christmas.

Who remembers when popular newsagents Martins was in Queensgate? And, of course, C&A which for so long was one of the big hitters of the high street.

The final picture shows a pre-pedestrianised Bridge Street.

Chris said: “Visonhire on the far left was where you hired TVs and video recorders - now we can watch on our phones!

“Other shops you can see are Eastern Electricity, Lavells, Fosters Brothers, Ratners, Peter Lords, Timothy Whites and there’s a banner advertising Cinderella at the Key.”

Chris’ latest book, Just Be Kind a tribute to our NHS and a fundraiser for Breast Cancer Research will soon be sold out.
