Back to the 70s and how Peterborough city centre looked

Here are three wonderful photographs of Peterborough city centre.

Two of the pictures are taken from roughly the same spot – at the top of Bridge Street looking towards Cathedral Square.

Both were taken in the 1970s before the area was pedestrianised. The picture at the bottom was taken in 1979 and presumably the crane was in place for the start of the Queensgate development.

If you look at The Guildhall it would it seem it had been cleaned between the taking of the two pictures.

The middle picture is a view of Long Causeway looking down towards Broadway.

This photograph was taken in 1973, again before pedestrianisation.

If you have very good eyes, and or a magnifying glass, you can make out people queueing to get on the 386 to Netherton.

Sheltons department store can be seen in the background.
