2020 - the year Peterborough United said goodbye to a legend

Fans cheered for a Peterborough United legend for the final time after he lost his battle with illness.

Tommy Robson had thrilled fans at London Road for decades - first as a dazzling winger who made more appearances in the blue shirt than any other player - and secondly as a member of the club’s community turning up to games with his trademark beaming grin, meeting fans and regaling them with stories and tales from his career, which were guaranteed to leave all who were in his company smiling from ear to ear.

While born in the North East - and retaining his Geordie accent - Peterborough became his home, and earlier this year he was given the greatest honour his adopted home could give - freedom of the city.

Sadly last year, Tommy was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease - but throughout his battle he kept on smiling.

He died aged 86 on October 8.

While social distancing measures were in place, fans came out in their droves to say goodbye to the legend outside Peterborough United’s home ground when the funeral procession drove past later in the month. Players and other legends were on hand to say their farewells to Tommy.

Fans - many of whom were not born when Tommy starred for Posh - joined in a round of applause and sung songs in tribute to him.

At the crematorium there were tributes from Chelsea and Newcastle United, who Tommy also played for.
