Youngsters can volunteer at Peterborough City Hospital

North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust are looking for volunteers to be part of a ‘Young Volunteer Summer Programme’, which will run from 27 July until 28 August and take place at Peterborough City and Hinchingbrooke Hospitals.

The opportunity will give young people, between the ages of 16-25, the chance to gain an insight into how a hospital is run and the different career paths and roles within the health sector. They will also be able to grow their own self confidence and gain new communication skills by meeting new people. The Trust will also provide a reference and certificate of completion of the programme and candidates will be able to put their experience on their CV in future.

Carol North, Head of Volunteering, said: “We have a great team of volunteers working with us, so this is a good opportunity for young people to gain some experience in the summer holidays. During the programme volunteers will be asked to work for two, four hour shifts per week, including weekends and will be asked to give directions to visitors coming in for outpatient appointments.

“The volunteers will all be given infection control training before starting and will be required to wear a face mask while on site.”

Criteria for volunteers:

• Parental consent will be requested for volunteers under 18

• Two references will be asked for: one from a teacher at school and a personal/character reference

• The hospital will arrange a telephone interview to ask questions about any previous volunteering experience, whether you have a DBS check (if not they will cover the cost of a DBS certificate)

• The volunteer team will then match the young volunteers to appropriate roles in the hospital.
