Ward-by-ward breakdown: Figures show health inequality in Peterborough

The figures show a big gap in outcomes for people throughout the city with the mortality rate in Ravensthorpe 50 per cent above the national average, while in some wards child development and GCSE results are much lower than other parts of the country.
As an example, 36.2 per cent of children in Park Ward are achieving a good level of development at age five, compared to 95 per cent in Barnack.

Peterborough City Council has said it is publishing a new strategy shortly to tackle inequality throughout the city.
Councillor Richard Ferris, member for Park Ward, said more is needed to be done in the area.
He highlighted improvements to the local environment - including access to green space and tackling anti-social behaviour - improving conditions likely to lead to more walking and cycling - with a call for 20mph limits across residential areas - and tackling cheap alcohol and drugs use.

Hide AdFellow Park Ward member, Cllr John Shearman, a former headmaster, said: “We have got two good secondary schools. King’s is well above the national average and Thomas Deacon Academy under Julie Taylor is making significant progress.
“Schools in the city have now got to look at not just saying they are making good progress but to push themselves even more.”
Cllr Ed Murphy, member for Ravensthorpe, said: “Like everywhere Ravensthorpe folk need skilled jobs, decent council housing and more help from the police to tackle crime. The local Tory council has not helped by shutting children’s centres, charging more for services for the elderly, meals on wheels, and cutting funding to health improvement.”
Other indicators used to establish the picture in each ward include unemployment, bad health and binge drinking.

Peterborough MP Stewart Jackson said: “Disparities in health outcomes is an endemic issue and really pretty depressing. We must redouble our efforts through targeted services and education to reduce these big differences but it will take many years.”
Dr Liz Robin, director of public health at the council, said poor health is often closely related to wider social issues like poverty and unemployment.
She added: “We’re highly focused on the health and wellbeing of people living in both the urban and rural areas of Peterborough, and recognise that today there are a number of challenges.

Cllr Diane Lamb, the council’s cabinet member for public health, said: “Within the Health and Wellbeing Strategy we have a section on tackling inequalities in health and have identified certain geographical areas and demographic groups that require special attention.
“But until our proposals have been reviewed by local people we can’t confirm the exact shape of activities.
“An important part of addressing health is that it’s not something the council can change on its own.
