Spalding schools close over coronavirus fears

Two schools in Spalding have closed due to fears a person has the coronavirus.

Both Lutton St Nicholas Primary School in Marriots Gate, Lutton, and Gedney Church End Primary School, in Church End, Gedney, which are affiliated with each other, have posted the same message on their websites.

It reads: "The school is closed as a precautionary measure because of a potential connection to the coronavirus by an individual within the school.

"The individual has been isolated and is being tested.

"Following advice from the Department of Health the school is being deep cleaned before re-opening.

"Further updates will be made via the school app or this website."

No more information on when the schools will re-open, and how the disease may have been contracted, have been revealed.

Nationally, reports of rising cases in northern Italy, with stringent measures by the government there locking down wide geographical areas, has caused some concern in the UK – particularly because many schoolchildren were on skiing trips to the Italian Alps during half-term last week.

A number of schools in the UK have closed completely in response to the situation in Italy because of ski trips.

But England's chief medical officer, Professor Chris Whitty, has advised against blanket school closures even if their pupils were in northern Italy during the holiday.

The World Health Organization said this week that although coronavirus is not yet at the stage of a pandemic, it has the potential to become one.
