Although the city has yet to have a confirmed case of the virus, panic buying has set in judging by these photos sent in from Peterborough Telegraph readers.

Andy Hutchcraft tweeted the PT a photo of his local Sainsbury’s in Oxney Road which had been cleared of loo roll and paracetamol, while Suzanne Ostler sent in a photo from Tesco in Werrington which had also run out of its supply of toilet roll.

Despite the Government saying there is no need to panic buy, stockpiling has continued, forcing retailers to limit the amount of certain items people can buy.

Tesco has now limited many high-demand items to five per shopper while Ocado, the online supermarket, was rationing toilet rolls.

Fortunately, there is no sign that the situation in Peterborough has become as extreme as Bankstown in Sydney, Australia, where two women were charged after a fight in a supermarket over toilet paper.

The pair will appear in court after being arrested on suspicion of affray.

Supermarket own brand hand sanitiser is being sold for up to £30 per bottle online
