New world leading technique helps Peterborough doctors diagnose potentially fatal heart problems

A world leading new technique to help doctors diagnose potentially fatal coronary heart disease is now being used at Peterborough City Hospital.

–HeartFlow, Inc and North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust have partnered to help clinicians diagnose coronary heart disease (CHD), which is one of the UK’s biggest killers. By using the non-invasive HeartFlow Analysis, many patients can now receive an accurate diagnosis without undergoing invasive procedures such as a coronary angiogram. It also reduces patient time in hospital and face-to-face clinical contact during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The HeartFlow Analysis takes data from a CT scan and uses deep learning technology and highly trained analysts to create a personalised, digital 3D model of the patient’s coronary arteries. Its algorithms solve millions of equations to simulate blood flow in a patient’s arteries to help clinicians assess the impact of any blockages.

This unique technology helps doctors quickly diagnose and decide the appropriate treatment for patients. In many cases, the HeartFlow Analysis removes the need for invasive diagnostic procedures, which carry risks of complication, and is estimated to save the NHS £214 per patient.

Dr Rebecca Schofield, consultant cardiologist, North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust said: “The HeartFlow technology helps us prevent heart attacks, understand the severity of a patient’s condition and the treatment they may need, or reassure them that they don’t need any further investigations. Historically, we had to rely on invasive procedures for this information. Since using HeartFlow, we’ve been able to do more non-invasive investigations to reach a diagnosis for patients, which is better for them and helps save hospital resources.

“We cover a population of around 800,000 across Peterborough and Cambridgeshire, caring for a diverse mix of patients with cardiac needs. Using HeartFlow with a CT scan, we can see urgent patients more quickly. Our cardiology and radiology departments work closely together so patients can have their CT, HeartFlow, and final treatment decisions made within hours. The 3D digital model produced by the HeartFlow Analysis lets us show patients what’s happening in their hearts and helps them to more clearly understand any procedures or treatments they may need.”

The technology is available at Peterborough City Hospital but patients across North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust can access the CT and HeartFlow Analysis pathway.

Lance Scott, Chief Commercial Officer at HeartFlow said: “NHS England leads the world with its approach to CHD diagnosis, one of the country’s biggest killers. We’re pleased to be working with North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust to streamline the patient diagnostic experience and reduce unnecessary procedures. Patients can receive a diagnosis and treatment plan after just one trip to the hospital and many can go home reassured they only need to be treated with medication.”
